COTTON. FROM BLUE TO GREEN® and National Geographic Kids Establish a New Guinness World Record
People Across the Country Donated Jeans to Set a Guinness World Record for the Largest Collection of Clothes to Recycle.
Beginning in April, National Geographic Kids Magazine asked readers across the country to donate their old jeans to set a Guinness World Record for the Largest Collection of Clothes to Recycle. The response was overwhelming, and denim donations continued to pour in after the June 30 deadline.
Then, amid the rush of the morning commute on August 12 at Union Station in Washington, D.C., the COTTON. FROM BLUE TO GREEN® denim drive and National Geographic Kids Magazine established the Guinness World Record: 33,088 pairs of denim jeans, which will be recycled into UltraTouch™ Natural Cotton Fiber Insulation and donated to communities in need.
Commuters stopped to look, intrigued by a 20-foot high installation of a scaled-down home in the middle of Union Station. The structure illustrated the end use of the recycled jeans, and also displayed the final tally of the record-setting number of jeans collected.
“Education and community involvement are cornerstones of the COTTON. FROM BLUE TO GREEN® denim drive,” explained Paula G. Rosario, Vice President, Strategic Alliances at Cotton Incorporated. “We knew that National Geographic Kids Magazine would be the perfect partner to reach young people across the country with a message of environmental and social responsibility. We are both delighted and overwhelmed at the end result.”
Created by Cotton Incorporated in 2006, the COTTON. FROM BLUE TO GREEN.® denim drive was established to recycle denim into natural cotton fiber insulation and aid communities in need. Through a multi-stage process, donated denim is recycled into UltraTouch™ Natural Cotton Fiber Insulation, an environmentally friendly insulation, which is then used in building houses in areas affected by natural disasters. It takes approximately 500 pairs of jeans to insulate one average-size U.S. house. To date, the COTTON. FROM BLUE TO GREEN.® denim drive has collected nearly 100,000 denim pieces nationwide, producing insulation used in new homes for more than 180 families in the Gulf Coast region.
