Denim "Duhs" For Every Body Type
Say goodbye to denim blunders with our body type jean guide
As the dubbed skinny jean has so cleverly demonstrated, when it comes to fit and style, not all jeans are created equal. When it comes to denim, there aren’t any “one size fits all” solutions, but luckily denim is made of a fabric known for its infinite potential, comfort, and wearability. Because denim is cotton-duh! There is such a thing as the perfect pair of jeans to suit your specific body type. So say goodbye to droopy backsides and muffin top bellies with our body type jean guide.
Apple-Shaped
Those who are apple-shaped are typically top heavy, have narrow hips and thighs, and skinny legs. These body types should stick to regular or high rise jeans in order to avoid a "muffin top"; the appearance of a bulging midsection. Pockets can be an “apple’s” best-friend when it comes to denim, since they provide the perfect disguise for any tummy issues they may have in the front and add definition to the booty in the back.
• Cut: Bootcut, Straight
• Rise: Regular, High
• Wash: Dark, Grey, Black
• Pockets: Front & Back, 5-pocket
Pear-Shaped
The pear-shaped woman tends to carry her weight in the lower area of her body. These women tend to have a small to medium bust and a well-defined waist, while areas such as the hips, thighs, calves and bottom are relatively larger.
• Cut: Slight Bootcut, Straight, Cigarette
• Rise: Low
• Wash: Dark, Clean Wash
Boyish Figures
In order to create a curvier look, boyish figures should refrain from wearing baggier styles that hide the shape and opt for a tapered leg jean that sits on the waist. Fortunately for these gals, this body type is a perfect match for the “skinny” jean, however if they forgo that option, tapered denim styles and flared leg jeans create volume and curve for women seeking a more shapely appearance. You can also try jeans that are “whiskered” on the outer thighs, to provide a curvier appearance.
• Cut: Flare, Skinny
• Rise: Low, Super Low
• Details & Trends: Whiskering, Zipper Details
Curvy Figures
The curvier woman should purchase her denim with a hint of stretch. Ideally she should look for 2% stretch in a pair of denim trousers, bootcut denim or flared jeans. Stretch denim places jeans just above the hips. Flared and bootcut styles help put curves in proportion with the rest of the body.
• Cut: Bootcut, Flare
• Rise: Low
• Pockets: Front & Back, 5-pocket
• Wash: Dark
Still not sure if the jeans you’re looking at are right for you? Below are some “Denim Duhs” for all women regardless of shape and size.
1) Be sure denim is a bit longer than you need. A little length is okay, especially for
dressier denim looks with boots or heels.
2) Side seams should always be straight. If the seams curve, it is a sign that your denim is too tight.
3) Pockets should lie flat. If your pockets are bulging at the sides, it could be a sign that
they are not the right cut and fit for your body.
4) Jeans should not be baggy in the front or rear. Excess baggage is a definite sign of
wardrobe malfunction.
5) Remember that denim is made of cotton and cotton equals comfort. If you’re not feeling comfy
sitting or standing in your jeans, chances are that they are not the right pair for you.
