Decorating Throughout the Decades

Take a Cue from History: a Lesson on Home Décor

Similar to the trends we see in fashion, home decorating is an evolution of style, space, and color. Ever wonder what influences the most current trends in your wardrobe, but most importantly what’s hot in home décor? Take a look around you. The answer lies in the current times- the economy, society, and even politics have a tremendous influence on the trends you see in home décor and interior design. Take a cue from history- look back at how each decade inspired trends in home décor.

Home Decorating - 1960’s

The 1960’s is historically synonymous with liberal attitudes and radical change. The 60's glorified a period revolution in American culture and home decorating trends weren't far behind. It was this same spirit of rebellion that gave birth to psychedelic flower patterns, competing colors, and tie-dye prints that became emerging trends during that time.

Home Decorating - 1970’s

The Hippie culture which began in the 1960’s peaked in the early 70’s. The advocacy of tranquility and world peace translated itself into the interiors of our homes. Home decorating in the 70’s became about comfort and relaxation, which embodied itself in shag carpets, cushy recliners, velvet couches, and plush throw pillows.

Home Decorating - 1980’s

During the 80’s we witnessed various social and economic changes as wealth and production migrated to newly industrializing economies. Although financially speaking the 80’s were not very upbeat, home decorating trends displayed optimism and hope with bright pinks and neon colors- a possible attempt to distract from the social difficulties and multiple debt crises that existed during that time.

Home Decorating - 1990’s

Black& White Throw Pillow

Also known as “The Computer Age”, the 90’s was a period of growth and expansion for many high-income countries such as the U.S. This is a period where lives sped up, leaving little time to worry about home decorating. Perhaps this is why Black and White home décor became a big trend- classic and simple.
