Recession Chic
The Best of Recession Chic Under $100!
Historically speaking, fashion trends tend to reflect the current economic climate. Taking a cue from the economic crisis, “recession chic” has become one of the more popular trends of the season. Extravagant styles are being replaced with clothing lines that reflect the simplicity and thrift of Depression-era trends. Retailers everywhere are rolling out vintage-style dresses, high-waist skirts, and a variety of clothing lines that are reminiscent of those in the years following the market crash of 1929 and the oil crisis of the 70’s—but “recession chic” runs much deeper than flapper hemlines and bohemian skirts. “‘Recession Chic’ has emerged as a trend based not only on styles from that era, but also on an aesthetic that looks to recapture the values associated with it,” says Eben Nicastro, Product Trend Analyst, Cotton Incorporated. “Consumers are calling for simplicity, frugality, and comfort, and those sentiments are finding their way into directional apparel for the season that recalls the simplicity and classic designs of the Depression era.” The Great Depression, in other words, has become a powerful theme for many Americans who see themselves as modern-day counterparts, resulting in a desire for clothing that is functional, durable, and simple. From wrinkle resistant to water repellent, new finishes and treatments for cotton apparel go a long way in defining the terms that exemplify “recession chic.” And consumers have taken notice, with 78% of Cotton Incorporated Lifestyle MonitorTM respondents stating that cotton and cotton blends are their favorite fiber to wear.
Minimalism may be the new “it” trend but it doesn’t mean your fashion has to follow the downward spiral home of falling investments. Don’t let the recession put your wardrobe in a style slump. Check out “recession chic” for under $100, in a fabric that’s comfortable, durable, and easy to wear: cotton!
